Man United leading the race to sign 21-year-old Ligue 1 star, journalist claims

Manchester United the frontrunners to sign Boubakary Soumare

Speaking on the Italian Football Podcast (h/t Mirror), journalist Vito Angele has revealed that Manchester United are leading the race to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

A product of the PSG youth setup, Soumare made the switch to Lille in 2017 and has gradually grown into one of the most talented young defensive midfielders in France.

An ever-present in the Lille midfield, the 21-year-old has made 22 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing with a solitary assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Soumare’s growth over the past year or so has seen him attract interest from who’s who of Europe including Manchester United, AC Milan and Liverpool. Angele, though, has insisted that the Red Devils are the favourites to sign him up as things stand.

“He is an important player but I don’t think he will be coming to Serie A. Man Utd are working on him and they are the favourites to sign him right now. Lille are also asking a high price for him which is too much for Milan.”

Manchester United have a packed central midfield unit as things stand. However, Paul Pogba faces an uncertain future at the club. Moreover, Nemanja Matic isn’t getting any younger and will soon need to be phased out of the first-team.

So, signing someone like Soumare, who can gradually take over as United’s holding midfielder, in the long run, makes a lot of sense from the club’s point of view.

Soumare will be entering the final year of his contract with Lille at the end of the season. So, he would be available at a bargain price in the summer. A move for him would be good for the club, especially with Declan Rice not interested in a transfer to Old Trafford.
