Derby County manager Wayne Rooney plays down interest in Phil Jones
Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones were part of a number of title-winning teams over the past decade. The duo was part of the last United side that won the Premier League title in 2013 during Sir Alex Ferguson’s swansong season.
Fortunes however have acted differently for both players. While Rooney left the club as a legend, Jones has struggled with injuries and could be on his way out soon.
According to the Express, Rooney, now the interim manager of Derby County, has refused to be drawn into a discussion regarding the future of Jones.
With Jones struggling for game time at Old Trafford, he was linked with a loan move away in January. Championship side Derby County were one of the clubs linked with him.
Rooney refused to comment on the news as long as Jones remains a United player.
“Phil Jones is a Manchester United player and it is not my job to really speak on him.”
While the 28-year-old is no more a key player for United, he could make aworld of difference for the Rams. Derby are currently 22nd in the Championship and are facing a long and hard fight to stave off relegation.
They have struggled to score goals this season and will need to tighten up at the back in order to get positive results. It can also be argued that Jones could do with a spell outside the limelight to get his fitness and career back on track.
