Sheffield United interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard
According to a report by MEN, Sheffield United have expressed interest in signing Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard on loan in January.
Chris Wilder, Sheffield United’s manager, is understood to have discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his team’s 3-2 defeat against United this week.
Lingard has not featured for the Red Devils in the last 3 months, with his only appearances for the club coming in the League Cup.
The 28-year old’s last Premier League start came all the way back in January. A starter for England in the 2018 World Cup, he has not featured for the Three Lions since June 2019.
Lingard, who has had loan spells with Brighton and Hove Albion, Derby County, Birmingham City, and Leicester City early in his career, fits the profile of players that Sheffield United are looking at. And now, the Blades have opened talks to sign him on loan in January. (h/t MEN)
However, Sheffield United may encounter a financial hurdle. Having spent £53million on players this summer, they may find it hard to match Lingard’s £100,000-a-week wages. (h/t MEN)
United, on the other hand, will trigger an extension in his contract that extends his stay by one year. Lingard is in the last 6 months of his current contract but United want to use the clause to obtain some fee for him in the summer.
Sheffield United are rooted to the bottom of the table after just 1 point this season. Their interest in a seasoned Premier League player like Lingard is thus is not overly surprising.
