Manchester United set for financial setback after Champions League exit

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are set to experience a financial setback following their Champions League exit against RB Leipzig yesterday.

The Red Devils failed to secure the required point and wound up losing to the Germans. This saw us become the lone English side this season to not make it past the group stages.

As a lucrative competition, our early exit will see us miss out on financial rewards.

Manchester United have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League

Qualifying for the knockout stages would have seen the club net £8.5million. To put it in context, we will get just £7.7million if we go on to win the Europa League. (h/ The Athletic)

It is fair to conclude that the deeper we could have gone in the Champions League, the more we would have benefitted both on and off the field. For example, a quarter-final place in the Champions League is worth £9.5m and a semi-final place is worth £11m. (h/ The Athletic)

Winning the Champions League would have earned United an impressive £17.3m. It is more than double of what we could potentially get for doing the same in the Europa League. (h/t The Athletic)

The exit however does not affect our deal with Adidas. The sportswear giants could have been able to deduct £25million from their £75million annual payment had we failed to qualify for the competition last season. (h/t The Athletic)

The deal with shirt sponsors Chevrolet is also not impacted by our exit.

With United not being immune to the financial impact caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we could have done with the riches of the Champions League.

While finances are well and good, it does not bode well for our standing as a top team that we are out at the first handle. There is much work to be done if we are serious about competing for the biggest prizes again.
