Bruno Fernandes hails the impact of new signing Edinson Cavani
In an interview with MUTV (h/t Mirror), Bruno Fernandes praised Edinson Cavani and highlighted the striker’s importance to the Manchester United squad.
Manchester United were trailing 2-0 at half-time to Southampton at St. Mary’s, which prompted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring on Edinson Cavani at the start of the second half.
The Uruguayan set up Bruno Fernandes in the 60th minute for the first goal and then went on to bag a late brace to win the game for United.
Speaking after the 3-2 win, Bruno Fernandes praised the Uruguayan’s instincts and implied that he was right about Cavani’s assessment earlier in the season.
“For me, he’s one of those strikers that can smell the goal. He smelt the goal – you need to have this feeling to score these two goals. As I said some weeks and some months ago, Edi will help us and he’s helping already.”
Fernandes went on to say that Cavani’s importance to the United side is more than just his goal-scoring abilities, and that the 32-year-old will continue to be a vital squad member.
“For me, one of the best games he played was against Basaksehir in the Champions League. Nobody talks about that because he didn’t score, but he did an amazing game. He helps a lot and he will help more and more in the future. When you have strikers who move a lot, and they give you the chance to play balls for them, it is really good.”
The Portuguese maestro pointed out that while he didn’t want to single out and praise any single striker from the team, Cavani’s quality gave him no other choice.
Meanwhile, Burno Fernandes continues to rack up the numbers. The Portuguese has 22 goals and 14 assists in his 36 matches for the club since his £47million move from Sporting Lisbon. (h/t Mirror)
However, Fernandes believes it’s about the team, and not just him.
“I’m happy to help the team. And I’m happy because we win. But the point now is to look out for each other. We need to keep winning because we want to be at the top of the table and we have to fight I think the sacrifice we made in the second-half [against Southampton] and the way we ran and helped each other was fantastic.”
