Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives David de Gea injury update after Southampton win

Speaking in the post-match interview after the win against Southampton on MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an injury update on David de Gea after the Spaniard did not finish the full 90 minutes this weekend.

The Manchester United goalkeeper clashed with the goalpost as he unsuccessfully attempted to save a 33rd-minute free-kick from Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

Ward-Prowse scored from the free-kick to give Southampton a 2-0 lead after Jan Bednarek put the hosts up in the 23rd minute. De Gea looked jaded after the clash and was subsequently withdrawn at half-time, with Dean Henderson coming on for him in the second half.

David de Gea was fit enough to watch from the bench as United completed a trademark comeback to win the game 3-2, with Edinson Cavani scoring a late brace to add to Bruno Fernandes’ goal at the hour mark. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Speaking to MUTV after the match, Solskjaer responded by praising Henderson’s performance and said that the injury to De Gea is not serious, with the substitution only being a precautionary measure.

“A knock just above the knee, hopefully he’ll be OK for Wednesday. Dean came on and was very assured.”

This means that the Spanish stopper could feature in the UEFA Champions League group stage game against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Manchester United lead Group H with 9 points from 3 matches as they take on second-placed PSG at Old Trafford. A win against the French side would secure the top spot for United in the group, while a draw would see them go through.

The win against Southampton at the weekend meant that United had won 8 away games in a row in the Premier League for the first time ever, but the Norwegian downplayed the achievement and focused on his team’s performance.

“It’s a difficult league, of course, but the no fans away from home has had an impact on that record,” said Solskjaer. “We just care about the three points and the manner they came. From the first kick to the last the boys were focused and ready, we played well and created chances but we got what we deserved.”
