Manchester United boss explains the reason for Anthony Martial’s slow start this season

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is yet to hit his peak this season.

The French ace showcased his ability last season as part of a prolific triumvirate that included Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

This saw him put up his best numbers in a United jersey. Martial ended the campaign with 23 goals and was the club’s top goalscorer in 2019/20.

Unfortunately, he has been unable to carry over the rich vein of form into the current campaign. He has netted just two goals in eight appearances for United and has gone scoreless for France too. (h/t The Mirror)

According to The Mirror, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the striker’s poor form can be attributed to a lack of pre-season.

‘He’s not had a pre-season as usual and he’s working towards his peak form.”

The Norwegian believes that Martial is edging closer to his best. With a set of games to come, an upturn in the player’s fortunes could not have been better timed.

A red card against Tottenham hotspur also saw the striker miss a number of games due to suspension. This break from football has also played a part in him not hitting his best run of form.

“Hopefully he will continue working hard to get to his best again.”

Solskjaer clearly has a high opinion of his striker. He praised the Frenchman’s finishing and believes he is about to experience a turn in fortunes soon.

United have struggled to score goals in recent weeks. Apart from Bruno Fernandes, players have lacked that clinical edge in front of goal.

Hopefully, Solskjaer’s assessment is spot on and we will soon see the Martial of old.
