Bruno Fernandes reveals his style is reminiscent of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes
Speaking to the United podcast (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has compared his style of football to that of Paul Scholes.
A member of the famed class of 92, Scholes is amongst the best players to don the United jersey in the Premier League era.
The Ginger Prince made 709 appearances for the club and was a part of a number of Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant United sides.
Scholes, who donned the No.18 jersey, appears to have found a fan in the club’s current occupant of the number. Fernandes admits that his goalscoring tally reminds him of Scholes’ exploits at the club.
“For me, maybe I’m closer to Paul Scholes. (He) was a guy who likes to be in the box, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.”
Initially thriving in an attacking capacity, Scholes gradually moved into central midfield where he found himself at home. Despite playing deeper, he did not lose his scoring touch. In fact, his 153 goals and 73 assists are a testament to that.
Scholes has often been compared to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Fernandes has gone on to declare Scholes as the best of the English trio.
Finally, an answer to the question!
While the tally of goals scored may sway the decision in either Lampard or Gerrard’s favour, Fernandes elucidates that Scholes was much more of a difference-maker.
“I think Scholes is the one who makes more difference than anyone else. In the last generation, those three were the three best ones, and for me Scholes was best.”
Since moving to United, Fernandes has become a key attacking lynchpin from our midfield. If he goes on to have half the longevity and success Scholes has had, he will have done very well indeed.
