Manchester United are interested in French centre-back Dayot Upamecano
Dayot Upamecano is a wanted man with Manchester United keen on landing him, according to SportBild via SportWitness (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 22-year-old is a regular for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and has impressed for a couple of years. Upamecano was one reason why Leipzig reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, and Manchester United are keen on landing him (h/t Manchester Evening News).
However, it won’t be easy as the report adds that Manchester City and Real Madrid are also interested in the French centre-back.
Upamecano has a contract with the Bundesliga side until 2023 but a release clause was added into his latest deal. This clause allows the centre-back to leave Leipzig for just €45m but it gets activated at the end of this season (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The report adds that a move for Upamecano could happen in the next summer window as United had scouted the Frenchman when he was a teenager.
United need a centre-back
United landed a couple of quality defenders in Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka a couple of years back.
However, that hasn’t been enough to transform our shaky defence. We have tried multiple partners for Maguire but none of them seems to work in the long run.
Manchester City have already spent big in landing Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, and it would be interesting to see if they choose to go big for Upamecano.
Maguire has also struggled at certain points this season and pairing him with a rising defender like Upamecano could be the right move.

Upamecano is also a France international and at 22, has several quality years left in him. United didn’t make too many defensive signings at the start of this season and it will be interesting to see what we do come the end of this campaign.
