Man United to face off against Tottenham for 23-year-old Serie A star

Manchester United keen on Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic

According to Calciomercato via Sports Mole (h/t Football.london), Manchester United are interested in Nikola Milenkovic.

The Fiorentina star is in the final year of his contract. Unless he signs an extension he could bid goodbye to La Viola on a free transfer next summer.

The 23-year-old has been an ever-present in the Fiorentina backline this season. He has so far made seven appearances, while also grabbing himself a goal and an assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Serbian international is an imposing figure who stands tall at 1.95m. His versatility to also do a job at right-back adds to his appeal.

Milenkovic came through the youth ranks at Partizan before moving to Fiorentina in 2017. He has since made 103 appearances for the Italians, scoring nine goals.

While he is not the best defender in the league, he has showcased enough promise to be moulded into a solid performer. Moreover, the opportunity to get him on a free transfer is something to be considered.

Fellow Premier League side Tottenham are also in the fray for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Spurs have enjoyed an excellent summer where they made a number of shrewd moves. Securing a potential star on the cheap is something Daniel Levy could look to exploit.

Whether we maintain a serious interest and if it is enough to trump Spurs to his signature remains to be seen.

Milenkovic has also represented Serbia at the international level. He has so far won 23 caps for his country, scoring one goal.

The last Serbian defender to play for us was Nemanja Matic. If Milenkovic turns out half as good as him, we have a player on our hands.
