Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United will need to spend in the January transfer window
According to beIN Sports (h/t The Express), Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has called upon the club to add to their squad in the January transfer window.
United have lost three of their first six games in the Premier League this season. The 1-0 loss to Arsenal at the weekend saw us occupy 15th spot in the table.
The result once again showcased what has been an inconsistent run since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Our performances in the league are in stark contrast to Europe, where we have defeated both PSG and RB Leipzig.
Schmeichel believes United are yet to recover from the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. The club legend believes the Red Devils are still building a team.
“They are inconsistent. Make no mistake, this is still a team in transition and a developing team. They still need to bring new players in.”
The Dane has backed Solskjaer to continue spending in January in order to obtain that identity.
“It’s still a team that needs to find its identity and to find the main characters of the team.”
Same problem, same approach?
United have spent quite an amount on players since Ferguson left. In these seven years, we have had four managers, with none of them managing to take us back to the top.
Schmeichel’s assertion of throwing money at the problem is something we have tried without much avail. Player to player, the United squad has the ability to challenge for the top four as a bare minimum.
While the lack of identity is troubling, we struggle to see how that can be achieved by spending more money. The players coming in are unlikely to change the way the club functions. It is likely that they too will succumb to the rot that runs deep at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer, for all his support, has not managed to get the best out of the players at his disposal. While bringing in new players is well and good, he also needs to optimise the tools at his disposal.
