Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ends feud with Gareth Southgate

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held talks with Gareth Southgate to clear the air regarding Mason Greenwood.

The Norwegian was left displeased when Southgate picked Greenwood for his first England squad of the season. The trip to Iceland ended on a sour note for the youngster after he was sent home for breaching COVID-19 protocols.

He was subsequently left out of Southgate’s next selection. Greenwood is in contention to return to the fold when the England squad is next announced on Thursday.

The Three Lions are set to face the Republic of Ireland, Iceland and Belgium. The former is a friendly, while the latter two are Nations League fixtures.

Solskjaer went public with his criticism of England earlier this season. His feelings are understandable considering United had ended the season late due to their Europa League commitments.

Despite United’s requests not to select him, Greenwood was still named in Southgate’s squad. The tone today is however different, with Solskjaer approaching the player’s return with more acceptance.

“It’s Gareth’s decision who he wants in his team and I had a very good conversation with him before the last squad get-together.”

“I don’t want to interfere, it’s his decision who he picks of course, and if he wants to pick any of my players they are available.”

Solskjaer has given his approval to Southgate’s handling of England. He has trusted the English boss to do his job while the Norwegian gives his attention to United.

Greenwood is back in the reckoning at United having missed the games against Newcastle United and PSG. Hopefully, his troubles with England are over and the player has learned his lesson.

The reconciliation between Solskjaer and Southgate is the best for all parties involved. While Greenwood’s actions on his first call-up were not advisable, it has also served as a warning for him from repeating such mistakes.

It remains to be seen if the youngster will indeed make the squad this Thursday.
