Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has opened up on the competition posed to his spot by Alex Telles.

The English star has been the club’s go-to man at left-back when fit. However, injuries and a lack of consistency have made him far from infallible.

This combined with the signing of Telles on deadline day, Shaw has a fight on his hands to keep his spot in the starting XI.

“It’s pushing me even more with the competition we have and the players the manager has brought in.”

Shaw has largely played more or less every game for the club this season. He was part of a back three when Telles made his debut as a left-wing-back at PSG.

The Brazilian impressed at both ends of the pitch and also gave an account of his solid set-piece taking skills. Going by Shaw’s comments, rather than feel insecure, he appears to be pushing himself harder to keep his spot.

This can only augur well for both the player and the club. Competition for spots at a club like United should always be high.

It is only by raising one’s game that the team as a whole can evolve. In a sort of way, it is nothing short but the survival of the fittest.

Shaw’s performances have also caught the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate. The 25-year-old could be named in the England squad to be announced this Thursday.
