Speaking to BT Sport (h/t MEN), former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has revealed why Donny van de Beek has found opportunities hard to come by at the club.

The Dutch international was the club’s first high-profile signing of the summer. He moved to Old Trafford from Ajax Amsterdam in a deal that could rise to up to £40m.

In fact, both his starts have come in the Carabao Cup. Van de Beek is yet to start any of our five Premier League games so far.

Hargreaves believes the presence of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes have limited Van de Beek’s chances at the club. Both players play in a similar role, giving Solskjaer established options ahead of the Dutchman to choose from.

Hargreaves has hinted at an inefficiency in the recruitment process at United. It is not the best business to strengthen a position where you already have players.

“I’m sure he is going to get a run of games but when you spend £40 million on a player you’d like to think he’d play, but I think Ole will find a place when it’s available.”

Despite his difficulties faced, Hargreaves believes Van de Beek will get opportunities in the first-team in the future. Given the investment made by the club, Solskjaer is bound to find a spot for him in the team.
