Marco van Basten didn’t think Donny van de Beek made the right decision joining Manchester United

Former Holland star Marco van Basten has hit out at Donny van de Beek over his move to Manchester United.

Van de Beek was one of the top midfielders for Ajax and helped them reach the Champions League semi-finals a couple of years back.

United moved quickly to land him this summer, with the club stumping up £35million (h/t Mirror).

Van de Beek has also only played 60 minutes in the Premier League for us since joining. He did score against Crystal Palace after coming on as a substitute, but things haven’t exactly gone his way.

The Dutch international was on the bench in our 0-0 draw against Chelsea, and he wasn’t brought on either. All this seems to be getting to the legendary Van Basten, and he hit out at Van de Beek.

Not moving to the right club

Van Basten was speaking on Ziggo Sport as he continued his role as a pundit (h/t Mirror):

“Donny should not have gone to Manchester United.”

One issue for Van Basten was the lack of game time for Van de Beek and claimed that this isn’t good for his rhythm.

The Dutch legend also didn’t think that earning more at United was more important than playing games:

“I know he is earning loads and loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club.

“Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club.”

A lack of games is a concern for any top star but Van de Beek needs time to get accustomed to our playing style.

It isn’t new for a summer signing to be bedded in slowly, and there is no doubting the Dutchman’s quality.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reiterated that the 23-year-old will get game time in the coming weeks. Van Basten might have been worried about his fellow Dutchman’s move but Van de Beek should sign for us soon.
