Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces axe thanks to Ed Woodward

Speaking on the Football Index Podcast (h/t The Express), Danny Murphy believes Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not see out the season at the club.

The Red Devils boss has come in for criticism after an underwhelming start to the new season. United have won just one of their first three games and are languishing in 16th spot.

The Norwegian has not been helped by an underwhelming summer window where the club failed to land him his major transfer targets.

With the performance on the pitch lacking inspiration, Solskjaer could become the sacrificial lamb for Ed Woodward’s transgressions.

“I don’t expect Solskjaer to survive the season as Manchester United manager. I like Solskjaer, but the recruitment has let him down and I expect him to pay the price.”

A deadline day spree saw United agree deals for Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani before the window closed.

However, the club failed to land any of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Dayot Upamecano or Nathan Ake. The players were said to be Solskjaer’s top priority and Woodward failed to land any of them.

A win against Newcastle United will get us back on track but a period of sustained success is needed to ensure we remain in the hunt for top four.

The club lacks leaders on the pitch and the likes of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been shadows of their former selves. Murphy believes there is a defensive imbalance in the United squad that could prove costly.

Solskjaer has at times looked bereft of ideas when the tide goes against him on the pitch. He cut a forlorn figure as Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur dismantled us with ease earlier.

While the Norwegian isn’t without his faults, choosing to blame him solely for the club’s failures would be wide off the mark.
