Manchester United identify four alternatives for Jadon Sancho

A lot was expected of Manchester United going into the 2020 summer transfer window.

The club had just finished third the previous season while also making it to the semifinals of all three cup competitions. Given the right investment, there was every reason to hope we could push on to the next level.

Now with just three days to go before the window closes, fans could be forgiven for their lack of optimism.

Dutch international Donny van de Beek has been the only major signing to arrive at Old Trafford this summer. While the 23-year-old is a classy player, he cannot single-handedly paper over the chinks in our squad.

The club’s priority this summer was to land Jadon Sancho. What has been the saga of the summer appears to be ending with us getting the short end of the stick.

With time running out, the club has turned its attention to other alternatives to the English wonderkid.

Ismaila Sarr isn a realistic target for Manchester United

According to Sky Sports, this includes the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Ismaila Sarr, Luka Jovic, and Edinson Cavani.

Barcelona are willing to let go of Dembele but the player’s massive £215,000-a-week salary could prove to be an issue. Jovic has struggled since moving to Real Madrid and has also been embroiled in off-field controversies.

Sarr remains a more realistic option but will cost us around £40m. While he is promising talent, he is far from the finished product.

Edinson Cavani is a free agent

While Cavani will bring experience to the squad, he is at best a short-term option and does little to add to our right-wing.

Any way one looks at it, United have made a mess of what could have been a pivotal summer.

While there is still time to salvage what we can, it reflects poorly on our ability to put a long-term plan in place.
