Dimitar Berbatov wants Manchester United to focus on bringing in a pacy centre-back

According to the Metro, former Manchester United hero Dimitar Berbatov believes United should not be making Jadon Sancho their priority.

He believes the club should instead focus on bringing in a central defender. Questions were asked about our backline after the humbling by Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

“They need a center-half, and probably further recruitment also to be competitive.”

Having played with the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Berbatov is well aware of the quality of centre-backs United possessed. While he believes Maguire has impressed, Lindelof’s performance has left much to be desired.

“They need someone alongside Harry Maguire, look at how impressive he has been since he came in, and he is now captain. They need someone who is fast, like Rio Ferdinand was for Nemanja Vidic.”

The Bulgarian has asked the club to brace for a long season if the necessary additions aren’t made.

Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were a formidable duo

Despite the loss to Palace, Berbatov has urged the fans to back manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

While the defeat isn’t the best way to start the campaign, the Bulgarian has warned against over-reacting to the result. Having breezed past a virtually non-existent preseason, United will need some time to gather their bearings.

“If we only judge on this game, United need to buy a whole new squad! But we can’t over-react to one game on its own.”
