Manchester United lose out on Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham Hotspur

According to the Guardian, Manchester United have lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Sergio Reguilon.

The 23-year-old Real Madrid star spent last season on loan at Sevilla. He played a key role as the La Liga side beat United en route to Europa League glory.

The Red Devils are keen to bring in competition for Luke Shaw at left-back. Real on the other hand are ready to part with Reguilon.

It now appears that we will have to look elsewhere, with Real keen to insert a buy-back clause in any deal.

The Red Devils have refused to accede to the La Liga side’s demands, paving the way for Tottenham Hotspur to steal a march on us. The North London side are on the verge of signing the young defender for £27.6m.

Spurs have already agreed on personal terms with the 23-year-old, who is set to sign a five-year contract until June 2025. The buy-back clause can see Real take him back for about €45m. (h/t The Guardian)

The final figure will however depend on the incentivized add-ons included in the deal. Real also have the opportunity to match any bid Tottenham accept for the player.

This comes as a setback for Ole Gunnar Solskajer, who was keen on Reguilon. The buy-back clause was not the only point of contention for United.

The club was also not ready to pay €30m upfront. The Red Devils were only keen on a deal worth €20m plus add-ons. (h/t The Guardian)

Reguilon is not the only Real star United have missed out on. Tottenham are also closing in on Manchester United target Gareth Bale.

These developments are the latest setbacks suffered by United in what has been a frustrating summer so far. With time running out, it remains to be seen who we bring in.
