Manchester United eyeing Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are among a host of clubs interested in Antoine Griezmann.

The French superstar’s position at Barcelona has been called into question following Lionel Messi’s U-turn on his future.

Griezmann had been promised the Messi role by new Barca boss Ronald Koeman had the Argentine left the club. With him now set to stay, the Frenchman’s position remains unclear.

Messi’s decision could influence who stays and who goes at Barcelona. According to the report, Koeman will need to trim his squad to accommodate the Argentine and young talents such as Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele.

Brazilian Philippe Coutinho also looked to be on his way out. With Koeman now set to take another look at him, Griezmann’s position looks extremely vulnerable.

The 29-year-old moved to the Nou Camp last summer in a deal worth £107million. He has since failed to replicate the same performances he made for Atletico Madrid.

If United do decide to go for Griezmann, we could have to go up against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and possibly even Manchester City.

The Catalans are set to use the rest of their summer to restructure their squad. The chances of them recouping the amount they paid for him look remote.

Griezmann was a target for United in 2017. His contract at the Nou Camp runs until 2024 and he had earlier attracted attention from Paris Saint-Germain. (h/t MEN)

The Frenchman is not the same player he was at Atletico. While it could be the way he has been employed at Barcelona, his performances had seen a drastic drop last season.

In some ways, a move for Griezmann mirrors that of Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean will go down as one of our worst transfers in the modern era. United will do well to not repeat the same mistake.
