Manchester United to be offered Samuel Umtiti

According to a report from Spanish publication Cadena Ser (h/t MEN), Manchester United will be offered a chance to sign Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti on a free transfer, with the Catalans keen on to get his wages off the book.

Umtiti came through the youth ranks at Olympique Lyon and became a first-team regular at the French outfit. He joined Barcelona in 2016 and enjoyed plenty of success in his first couple of years at the club.

However, the last two seasons have been difficult for the Frenchman, who has struggled with injuries. This saw him lose his place in the starting XI to compatriot Clement Lenglet.

Umtiti has featured just 33 times in the last two seasons combined for Barcelona, giving an idea of how much time he has spent out on the sidelines.

Given this sense of unreliability, Barcelona are keen to offload him this summer. The Catalans, after a disappointing season, are looking to bring their wage bill down. (h/t MEN)

As a result, they are even willing to release Umtiti for free, despite him having three years on his contract. And Manchester United have been touted as a potential destination for the 2018 World Cup winner. (h/t MEN)

Manchester United are looking to add a new central defender, a player who can be the ideal partner for Harry Maguire. And at 26, Umtiti is on the verge of entering his peak years, at least theoretically.

While he has tasted success during his time with Barcelona, the Frenchman has struggled over the past couple of seasons. Injuries have hit the World Cup winner hard and signing him, even if it’s on a free transfer, would be a major risk.
