Manchester United expect Dean Henderson to challenge David de Gea

According to MEN, Dean Henderson is set to go head to head against David de Gea in the Manchester United goal next season.

The young custodian returned to Old Trafford after an impressive two-year loan spell at Sheffield United. His impressive performances earned him a new five-year contract worth £120,000 a week.

Having enhanced his reputation at Bramall lane, Henderson was keen to challenge for the number one spot at United. It would appear he has got just that.

A number of clubs including Aston Villa and Chelsea were keen on taking Henderson. That looks to be out of the question, with the 23-year-old set to stay at Old Trafford.

This could mean the end of Sergio Romero’s stint at United. The 33-year-old has been a dependable understudy to De Gea. However given Henderson’s arrival, he is expected to be the third choice.

Despite starting United’s cup games, Romero was binned by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the semifinals came around. According to the report, this has been to Romero’s displeasure.

The veteran is keen to garner regular playing time ahead of next summer’s Copa America. He has not played for Argentina since 2018 and staying on the bench is bound to do little to change that.

Henderson meanwhile has been selected in Gareth Southgate’s squad to face Iceland and Denmark this month. He could become the first United star to play in goal for England since Ben Foster.

With the European Championships also scheduled for next summer, the competition between De Gea and Henderson could be a tight one.

Jordan Pickford has seen his stock fall in recent months. The time is ripe for Henderson to usurp him as the England number one. However, with Nick Pope impressing at Burnley, Henderson will need to put in a shift when given the opportunity.
