Harry Maguire stays on as Manchester United captain
According to The Guardian, Harry Maguire will continue as Manchester United captain for the immediate future.
The English international was convicted of assaulting a police officer, swearing, resisting arrest and attempted bribery on the Greek island of Mykonos.
It comes as a huge blow both to the player and the club going into the 2020/21 campaign. According to the report, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make a long-term decision when pre-season training starts next week.
Maguire for his part has denied all charges and is set to appeal his conviction. His stance has received support from United.
United return to training on September 2. With our first fixture taking place at home on the 19th against Crustal Palace, Solskajer will have time to bring his squad up to the required levels. (h/t Premier League)
He is expected to make a decision during this time. As of yet, there is no scheduled meeting between the Norwegian and Maguire. One will eventually have to take place at some point in time in the future.
It is not clear when the player’s apology will be heard. As per the report, it is not expected to be anytime soon.
The truth of what really happened remains shrouded in speculation. What cannot be argued though, is that United’s name has been dragged through the mud.
Maguire may or may not have been justified in his actions, but his antics are unbecoming of that of a United skipper. What course of action United choose to take in the future, remains to be seen.
