Rio Ferdinand backs David de Gea to return to his best at Manchester United
According to Teamtalk (h/t Express), Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand expects David de Gea to rediscover his best form at the club.
The Spaniard has endured a difficult season where he has made a number of high-profile errors. Ferdinand however believes he has what it takes to retain his spot as the United number one.
De Gea’s errors have seen a section of the fanbase calling for him to be replaced by Dean Henderson. The United youngster is coming on the back of an excellent two-year loan at Sheffield United.
Despite the pressure on him, Ferdinand believes De Gea will come good. He has backed the 29-year-old to remind everyone why he was once the best keeper on the planet.
“De Gea has the ability to get back to where he was.”
Ferdinand believes De Gea has an excellent mentality and will be keen to rediscover his lost touch. With the player currently on a break, he is expected to return to action with renewed vigour.
“I think he can still be a big player for United, but he has a point to prove again now. He has had tough times before and has come back.”
Proven pedigree
De Gea has now spent nine years at the club since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011. Replacing a player of Edwin van der Sar’s calibre is not easy but the Spaniard proved himself up to the task.
A consistent performer, he was United’s best player on numerous occasions as the club struggled from manager to manager following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
Having spent three seasons playing with De Gea at Old Trafford, Ferdinand has first-hand knowledge of the Spaniard’s excellence.

Adversity has often brought the best out of United’s best players. Hopefully, De Gea too will showcase the same fighting spirit and get back to his best next season.
