Manchester United fans react as Romelu Lukaku scores an own goal in the Europa League final
It was a night to forget for former Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku. His Inter Milan side could not see off an inspired Sevilla team in the Europa League final.
The Belgian gave the Nerazzuri the lead from the penalty spot early on. With the game poised at 2-2, he had a chance to put his side ahead once again.
Through one on one against the keeper, he forced an excellent save from Yassine Bounou. Lukaku, however, ensured the next opportunity that came his way ended in the back of the net.
Unfortunately for him, it was at the wrong end. Diego Carlos’ overhead kick looked to be going wide before Lukaku’s outstretched leg deflected the ball into his own goal.
It turned out to be the winner on the night as Sevilla clinched their sixth title. The turn of events brought about much amusement among United fans.
The Red Devils faithful took to Twitter to poke fun at the former Old Trafford star for falling short at the final hurdle. A number of fans believe his success would have been used as a stick to beat United with.
Misplaced priorities?
We find it unnecessary that we waste time or find joy in the failures of those no more associayed with our club. Lukaku’s failure in no way helps us apart from making a point on social media.
We rather our team succeeds on the pitch and sue that to prove our detractors wrong. It would have been understandable had we been the ones to beat Inter in the final, but now it just seems petty.
Former United stars Alexis Sanchez and Ashley Young also appeared for Inter in the final.
We take a look at how some United fans reacted below.

United fans really enjoy bashing Romelu Lukaku don’t they? He never disrespected this club, never snaked us out, gave his all, yet people love to hate on him.

Rival fans really bullied us into thinking Lukaku, Alexis and Young left Man Utd so that they could win a European trophy. But the sad reality is Navas and Milner left City to win European trophies. This never gets spoken. The agenda against United is damn real. #UEL

Those “Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young & Alexis Sánchez all left Man United to win trophies” tweets that people already in their drafts would’ve been so annoying, man. Glad that Sevilla won. 👍
