Twitter takedown post that took a potshot at Phil Jones
According to the BBC, Twitter have apologized to Manchester United star Phil Jones after a post on their UK account appeared to poke fun at him.
The social media platform has also removed the tweet that has been at the centre of this storm. Their decision to do so comes after complaints were made about the post which read “Name a better defender than Phil Jones.”
Twitter confirmed that it was not their intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments and that they have taken down the post.
“It was not our intention to cause upset.”
They also went on to add that they were trying to showcase a new feature that allows users to limit who can comment on posts.
Jones, who is one of United’s longest-serving players in the current squad, looks to be on his way out of the club this summer.
The 28-year-old failed to reach the heights expected of him owing to constant injury setbacks. He has failed to make an appearance for United since the restart.
Jones was included in United’s Europa League squad currently camped in Germany. He was, however, unable to make the trip owing to yet another injury.
The Red Devils negotiated a tricky fixture against FC Copenhagen. They will now face Sevilla for a place in the showpiece event in Cologne.
According to The Telegraph, the tweet violated Twitter’s own rules for bullying and harassment.
Although provocative in nature, we personally do not feel that the post was malicious in nature. Twitter as a platform can be termed informative or toxic depending on one’s perspective.
In fact, by making a big deal out of it, United have brought it to the fore more than it would have been otherwise.

Phil Jones is not the best defender to have donned the United jersey. Despite his capacity to make errors, he has enjoyed a successful spell at United laden with trophies.
He deserves as much respect as any player irrespective of one’s allegiance. Now that the saga is now, we can hopefully focus and celebrate success on the field.
