Manchester United face Napoli threat in pursuit of Gabriel Magalhaes
According to MEN, Manchester United look set to miss out on Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.
The Brazilian is closing in on a move to Serie A giants Napoli in a deal worth £22million. As per the report, he will replace Senegalese superstar Kalidou Koulibaly, who is a target for Manchester City.
Personal terms between Gabriel and Napoli are found to be in order ahead of the proposed move. The 22-year-old has also garnered interest from Arsenal and Everton.
This will come as a blow for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is a fan of Gabriel. The Norwegian was keen on bringing in a left-footed defender to play alongside skipper Harry Maguire. (h/t Daily Record)
The Samba star has been a key player for Les Dogues as they finished fourth in Ligue 1. He made 34 appearances this season, scoring one goal. Unfortunately, they missed out on Champions League qualification.
United were also keen on Koulibaly. However, paying £62million for a 29-year-old who has recently suffered from injury is a major risk. Gabriel represents excellent value for money, with the player’s best years yet to come.
It is unfortunate that he will continue to develop at Napoli and not Old Trafford.
Even if the transfer breaks down for any reason, United will still find themselves at a disadvantage.
According to the Daily Star, Lille have been charged with FFP sanctions. This could see them drive up the player’s valuation.
