Douglas Costa identified as Jadon Sancho alternative by United

According to a report from Tuttosport (h/t Express), Manchester United are showing a strong interest in Juventus winger Douglas Costa, as a move for Jadon Sancho seems to have hit a snag.

The 20-year-old Sancho has been United’s top transfer target. Negotiations with the Englishman’s club, Borussia Dortmund, have been going on for a while. But an agreement is yet to be arrived upon. (h/t Express)

It had been claimed that Dortmund had set a deadline of August 10 for United to complete the deal. However, with that now passing and Sancho flying out to Switzerland for a pre-season training camp, United’s chances of signing Sancho have slimmed drastically. (h/t Express)

Now, the club seems to be looking for alternatives already, with Juventus star Costa emerging as a Plan B. (h/t Express)

The 29-year-old Costa has been with Juventus since 2017, having signed from Bayern Munich, initially on loan, before completing a £36m move a year later. However, he has struggled with injuries during his time in Turin and hasn’t been a regular, as a result.

Costa finished the 2019/20 campaign with three goals and seven assists from 29 appearances across all competitions for Juventus. Given that he started just seven Serie A matches this past season, his future at the club is far from certain.

Manchester United, as per the report, will not give up on Sancho yet and test Dortmund’s resolve with an offer. However, Costa is seen as a viable alternative for the Englishman should the move fail.

Costa is a proven performer, no doubt. But he has struggled with injuries for a while now and at 29, will not be a long-term solution for us. Sancho is the ideal signing for us this summer and the club should continue to push for his transfer.
