“They’ll be called upon” – Solskjaer insists Man United will not take Europa League for granted

Manchester United determined to win the Europa League

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can outdo his predecessor if he leads the club to Europa League glory.

Jose Mourinho’s endured a difficult first season in charge at Old Trafford. The Portuguese could only finish sixth in the league. This meant he had to win the Europa League to qualify for the lucrative Champions League.

To his credit, he did just that against Ajax Amsterdam in the final. Solskajer has no such pressure, having already secured a top-four finish.

However, he remains determined to win the competition. The Norwegian is in no mood to take it easy and test out his fringe players – at least from the quarter-final stage.

With United set to face LASK later tonight, he can rest easy knowing he can ring the changes for the tie. With United leading 5-0 from the first leg, it will take a collapse of cataclysmic proportions for us to not progress to the last-eight.

Having endured a long and tiring season, United looked fatigued in the final few games of the domestic campaign. With the new season fast approaching, rest is at a premium.

No time to slack off

According to the Daily Mail, speaking ahead of the game, the United boss admitted that his players are keen to play. He confirmed that his stars will not be given time off and will be called upon to perform on the pitch.

“We go into this with players wanting to win, so they won’t be given a break — they’ll be called upon.”

Solskajer’s sentiments can be well understood considering United are just four games away from glory. Granted, it is the continent’s second-tier competition. But a trophy is a trophy, something we have not experienced since 2017.

“We’re four games away from winning a trophy. We’re delighted with finishing third and the next step for this team is getting their hands on a trophy.”

From challengers to champions!

Having fallen at the semifinal stage of both the domestic cups, Solskjaer is keen to go further in Europe. United are among the favourites for the trophy.

There is no reason why we cannot repeat the heroics of 2017 if we play to our strengths.

It is heartening to see the United boss focus on winning trophies. Success is the bottom line in football and United is a club steeped in glory. If Sir Alex Ferguson has taught us anything, it is that coming second means nothing.

It is heartening to see that the same ambition runs through Solskjaer’s veins.

Winning the competition will not just end the club’s three-year drought but also ensure Solskjaer’s first major honour as a United manager.

Having done so numerous times as a player, it could very well be time for him to now lead us to success from the sidelines.
