Former England international backs Man United to make a bid for rival superstar

Glen Johnson believes Manchester United will be keen on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Speaking on Stadium Astro (h/t Express), Glen Johnson has backed Manchester United to make a bid for Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabonese international’s contract at Arsenal will expire next summer. A prolific scorer, he has scored 70 goals in 109 appearances for the Gunners.

Despite turning 31, he remains a potent forward capable of being a match-winner. It was on show yesterday when he scored both goals in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Will Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang follow in Robin van Persie’s route to Manchester United?

With Arsenal ready to build on the FA Cup success, losing Aubameyang would be a major blow to their rebuild.

Although they could demand a significant fee, replacing Aubameyang’s goals will be difficult. A proven quantity in the Premier League, he will be an asset to the United frontline.

“Liverpool would take him, City would take him, United would take him – everyone would take him.”

The United front three of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have been on fire this season. Despite enjoying a prolific season, the trio cannot be expected to handle a complete drawn out season.

Odion Ighalo has proven to be a dependable backup. However, his loan at the club expires in January. Bringing in another striker will be key going forward.

Deja vu?

The transfer, if it goes through, will have shades of Robin van Persie bridging the same divide. Signing the Dutchman proved to be a masterstroke as he immediately led United to a league title.

Aubameyang’s form suggests a similar impact at Old Trafford. He would be the perfect foil to our front three and also Bruno Fernandes.

More so at 31, he is a short-term option. This will help us bring in a proven match-winner while also giving Greenwood and Rashford the space and time to grow.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will be able to convince Aubameyang to stay. If they don’t, United will do well to take a gamble on the Gunners ace.
