Manchester United decide against paying Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho asking price

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth (h/t Express), Manchester United have decided against paying Borussia Dortmund £108million for Jadon Sancho.

The 20-year-old, however, remains United’s priority target this summer. One of the world’s best young players, his capture will be nothing short of a coup.

United’s decision to not give in to Dortmund’s demands is down to two reasons. The first being the adverse effect the coronavirus pandemic has had on finances.

The second is United’s confidence that they can get Dortmund to agree to a lower fee. This stems from us being the only club to make an official approach for the player.

If true, the latter seems to be a dangerous approach by the club. The dynamics of the deal could be turned upside down if another team does indeed enter the fray for Sancho.

The report goes on to add that United and Dortmund are currently trying to work out a deal. The Germans, however, refuse to budge from their valuation and want a decision to be made by August 10.

“Manchester United as it stands are not willing to meet Dortmund’s asking price.”

The likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid are also interested in the player. But the duo lacks the financial means to complete a deal.

Qualifying for the Champions League gives United a financial boost. The club’s decision to not move quickly could be something to regret later.

The same story as before?

The Bruno Fernandes deal comes to mind here. United delayed completing a deal for the Portuguese as they refused to meet Sporting Lisbon’s asking price. In the end, we did get our man, but only after paying what Sporting demanded.

Not only was precious time lost but our approach did little to dwindle Sporting’s resolve. Dortmund are a bigger club and could do the same. Add to it a suitor or two and we could be caught out.

With there being no pre-season this summer, it is imperative that we bring in players quickly. This will ensure they are in tune with the team when the season kicks off.

Despite the promise shown by the team this season, United are still some way away from competing at the top. Serious recruitment has to be made and the club cannot afford to dilly dally.

Solskjaer has done his part by getting us back into the Champions League. It is time Ed Woodward did the same.
