Man United legend names one player who can replace struggling Old Trafford hero

Rio Ferdinand names Jan Oblak to be the only player to replace David de Gea

According to the Independent, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes only Jan Oblak can replace David de Gea.

The United number one is once again under the scanner following his gaffe in the FA Cup semifinals against Chelsea.

This has led to questions regarding both his immediate and long-term future at the club. Ferdinand believes there are few keepers in world football who can replace De Gea.

“The only one I see is Oblak, but can you get him out of Atletico Madrid?”

Ferdinand believes Oblak is the only player who can come in and instantly replace De Gea. The Slovenian is among the best in the game and has consistently shown his quality for Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea too are monitoring the player who will cost a massive £110million. The same issue was brought up by Ferdinand. He believes it makes sense to continue with De Gea than spend a fortune on Oblak.

Ferdinand acknowledges that De Gea should have done better in the match against Chelsea.

“It is disappointing really, as a Manchester United fan you want to defend your player but at the moment he is not in a position to be defended in that respect”

It remains to be seen if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will persist with the Spaniard for the remaining Premier League games. Such a scenario will see reserve shot-stopper Sergio Romero take the gloves as early as Wednesday night.

De Gea has been an excellent player for the club for the most part of a decade. He has significantly regressed over the past two years.

It is something that cannot be denied. United will have to sort this out as this cannot continue for long.
