Man United keeping tabs on former PL star available on a free transfer

Manchester United interested in former Burnley star Jeff Hendrick

According to the Daily Star, former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick has emerged as a shock transfer target for Manchester United.

The Republic of Ireland international left the Clarets last month after the expiry of his contract. A player with considerable experience in the English game, United can pick him up for nothing given his free-agent status.

Capable of playing anywhere in the midfield and also as a second striker, the 28-year-old’s versatility will give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer multiple options.

A system player, Hendrick’s strength lies in his ability to win back and recycle possession. Given the players that United have in attack, this trait will benefit us during the transition from defence to attack.

Wilfred Ndidi does a similar job to great effect at Leicester City. Hendrick occupies a lower profile in the game but has a similar passing ability and is also a dominant force in the air.

Competition for the midfielder is high, with the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Newcastle United all interested. (h/t Daily Star)

United have in recent months been linked to Thiago Alcantara, Jack Grealish and Corentin Tolisso. Hendrick is a cheaper option who can certainly fulfil an important function in our midfield.

The thought of a freed up Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba foraying forward with Hendrick mopping up behind will be music to United fans’ ears.

The best players necessarily do not make the best team. United today has a system and players that complement it. The right player in the right system can do wonders.

Hendrick could become a key cog in our setup and ensure the system improves as a whole. He might as well turn out to be an exceedingly shrewd signing.
