Championship heavyweights join the race to sign out of favour Man United star

West Bromwich Albion are keen on signing Jesse Lingard

According to the Independent, West Bromwich Albion have emerged as a possible destination for Jesse Lingard. The Baggies have joined West Ham United and Everton in the race for the England international.

The 27-year-old has endured a tough season where his stock at the club has taken an almighty tumble. He has scored just two goals and made two assists in 36 appearances this campaign. (h/t Transfermarkt)

On the periphery of the squad, he has played just 63 minutes since the restart. With the likes of Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes setting new levels of performance, Lingard will need to step up significantly to get back into contention.

A change of scenery could hold the solution with the West Midlands a likely destination.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to strengthen his team going into next season. This can see him clear out a number of fringe players, including Lingard.

According to the report, the player himself is not keen to leave the club. But with him set to turn 28 this year, he might have to to obtain regular playtime.

A talented player in his own right, he has been unable to replicate his best form nor react positively to higher expectations. West Brom currently look set for a return to the Premier League, Lingard will offer them an experienced option who could do with a fresh start.

Given the size of United, it is natural for players to feel weighed down by expectations. With just a year to go on his current contract, it will also benefit the club if he is sold this summer.

Lingard has failed to hit his gold standard since returning from the World Cup in 2018. Personal problems too have not helped him off the pitch as he struggles on it.

The Baggies can offer him a fresh start. He will do well to take it with both hands.
