Manchester United need to beat Chelsea to fourth to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
According to the Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Express), Manchester United will need to qualify for the UEFA Champions league to sign Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
The 25-year-old is one of Serie A’s leading midfielders and is one of Lazio’s key players as they attempted to mount a title challenge this season. He has chipped in with 6 goals and 7 assists in 35 appearances this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Unfortunately, they have since fallen away, with Juventus now seven points clear at the top of the Serie A table. Competition for the Serbian is fierce, with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea all keen. (h/t Express)
The Serbian was touted as a replacement for Paul Pogba. With the Frenchman now appearing to stay put, United could support him by adding the Lazio midfielder. (h/t Express)
The midfield has suddenly exploded as a source of strength since the signing of Bruno Fernandes. Not only has the Portuguese sensation boosted our attack but has also raised the game of those around him.
Throw Milinkovic-Savic into the mix and we have a midfield capable of playing against the best.
A threat on multiple fronts
Premier League rivals Chelsea could prove to be our biggest adversaries in striking a deal. Finishing ahead of us in the league table will also see them finish ahead of us in the race for the 25-year-old Milinkovic-Savic.
United currently trail the Blues by two points, with five games still to go. The Blues have a tough run in and will hopefully slip up at some point.
Even if we do miss out on the top four, we can still make it to the Champions League if we win the Europa League. It is not a road not taken, with us achieving the same in 2017.
