Manchester United could miss start of 2020/21 Premier League season

According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United could face the prospect of missing the start of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign due to delayed European tournaments.

The three-month lockdown due to the pandemic means that all competitions have been pushed well beyond their original dates of completion.

With most of the leagues still continuing, both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League will resume in August. The finals for the two competitions are to take place on August 23 (Lisbon) and August 21 (Cologne) respectively. (h/t The Sun)

The Premier League and all the clubs will be meeting soon to decide the dates to restart the 2020/21 campaign. As per the report, there are three dates in consideration – August 22, August 29 and September 12.

While most clubs are pushing for the September date, officials are aware that August 22 would be a plausible option due to obligations with broadcasters. (h/t The Sun)

Should that be the case, Manchester United may miss the first match of the season, in case we advance to the finals of the UEFA Europa League.

As things stand, we are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the quarter-final after having thrashed LASK 5-0 in the Round of 16 first leg prior to the shutdown of football.

One of the biggest teams alive in the competition, we ought to be among the favourites. More so, considering the form that the team has been in since the restart.

Local rivals Manchester City are also in a similar position, with them still being alive in the Champions League. Wolves too face a similar problem.

Even if the clubs vote for a September start, our players would hardly get a two-week period before the start of the season (should we make it to the final). That will be anything but ideal given the already congested schedule.
