Robin van Persie sends congratulations to Anthony Martial

Former Manchester United star Robin van Persie took to Twitter to congratulate Anthony Martial for his hattrick against Sheffield United.

The Frenchman became the first United player to score a hat-trick since the Dutchman in 2013.

Van Persie expressed his happiness that the baton has finally been passed on to a current squad member.

Martial’s ability to find the back of the net will be an added bonus as we go into the final weeks of the campaign.

The Frenchman has failed to reach the expected levels after enjoying an excellent start to his United career. Hopefully, this will be a new beginning as United begin to look the real deal.

Van Persie scored two hattricks in the 2012-13 campaign. The Dutchman’s much-publicized move from arch-rivals Arsenal was all the ammo United needed to reclaim the Premier League title from City.

He played in all the 38 games that season and scored an incredible 26 goals and 15 assists. This permitted Sir Alex Ferguson to leave the club on a high by delivering our 20th league title. (h/t Transfermarkt)

One of our finest signings in recent years, Van Persie arguably won us as much as 28 points single-handled that season.

Martial joined the club the same summer Van Persie bid goodbye. Five years on, he finally looks to have taken up the mantle.

United’s win takes us to within touching distance of Chelsea in the fourth spot. With Leicester City unable to see off teams, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they too could be usurped.

We next take on Norwich City on Saturday in the FA Cup, before returning to league action against Brighton next week.
