According to Sport Witness (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United have expressed interest in former Tottenham Hotspur youth star Marcus Edwards.

The 21-year-old came through the ranks at Spurs before moving to Portugal last summer. He has been a regular for Vitoria Guimaraes and has notched up 7 goals and 7 assists in 30 appearances for the Portuguese club. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, Edwards was compared to Barcelona great Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino. (h/t Daily Star)

He showed he is capable of playing against the best when he scored against Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League. Edwards’ performances have garnered much attention, with Tottenham also keen to bring him back.

The North Londoners had included a clause that would see them net half of any future fee paid for Edwards. Vitoria value the player between €20m-€25m. This means Spurs only need to pay half of that.

Despite the interest, neither we nor Spurs have made a move for the youngster.

Edwards left England in search of regular football. It is difficult to see him get that at United. Although he is an excellent backup, he will find himself as an option rather than a priority.

United have targeted young English talents with a high ceiling in recent windows. Edwards has shown he has the potential this season.

However, he lacks the special something needed to break into the United line-up. The club can afford to lose out on the former Spurs starlet.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side still have a lot to play for this season. With a return to the Champions League still on the table, we can attract better players.
