Man United legend offers underfire star some valuable advice to save his career

David de Gea’s loss of form is more than a blip-Gary Neville

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast (h/t Sky Sports), former Manchester United star Gary Neville believes David de Gea is experiencing more than a blip in form.

The United keeper has been the subject of much debate following his errors over the last couple of seasons. He was once again in the line of fire for his mistakes against Tottenham Hotspur.

Neville believes that the keeper’s standards have dropped. This has led to a crisis of confidence that is clearly showing.

“He was the one player United could rely upon for the last four years but he’s not the same.”

Not very long ago, he was considered the best keeper in the world. Times have changed and the Spaniard has seen his stock fall.

Gary Neville believes David de Gea is facing a crisis of confidence

“He hasn’t been the same for some time. When form drops for six months it’s a blip but when it goes on for a year you start to worry.”

Neville believes that the old De Gea would not be making mistakes like these. A reliable keeper who has seen a marked fall in quality, it must have something to do with his mind.

The 29-year-old’s struggles are not limited to United. His form for the Spanish national team too has been called into question, with his own fans even booing him.

De Gea needs to go back to basics

De Gea endured a bad World Cup in 2018 where he failed to parry a Cristiano Ronaldo shot away from goal.

With Dean Henderson breathing down his neck, the Spaniard will have to rediscover his form quickly. Neville believes he will be well served by going back to the basics.

De Gea has now made seven errors leading to goals since the start of last season. It is the joint-highest among Premier League players.
