Saul Niguez reveals new club and Manchester United fans are not amused
Three days after promising to do so, Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has finally revealed his new club on Twitter.
It would appear that he used the term ‘new club’ too literally for our liking. Posting on Twitter, the 25-year-old had teased what many presumed was an imminent move to Manchester United.
Club legend Rio Ferdinand did little to quell to excitement as he too piled on the anticipation leading to today’s revelation.
Much to our chagrin, Niguez’s announcement was the creation of a new football club in Elche. Formed in association with his brother Aaron and named Club Costa City, it will help bring together more than 30 teams and more than 500 players of all categories between 4 and 18 years old in the city of Elche. United had scouted Saul back in January 2014 while David Moyes was the manager. Former star Phil Neville travelled to Spain to watch the then 19-year-old playing for Rayo Vallecano. (h/t MEN)
The Spaniard’s contract at the club runs until 2026. He had previously expressed his happiness at Atletico. A move to United would have added a lot to the Red Devils.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the 25-year-old as the perfect foil to Bruno Fernandes in midfield. A workhorse of a player, Niguez will supplement Fernandes’ attacking instincts and bring more balance to our midfield.
