Manchester United and Roma close to Chris Smalling loan extension
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport via Sport Witness (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United and Roma are close to agreeing to extend the loan of Chris Smalling.
The 30-year-old has joined the Italian giants on loan last summer. He has gone on to rebuild his reputation as a formidable defender in the Italian capital.
Smalling has made 28 appearances this season as Roma attempt to get back to the Champions League. They are currently in 5th spot, three points off the top four. The defender has so far chipped in with two goals and one assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)
With his loan expiring yesterday, there was uncertainty considering his future. It appears to have been put to rest with the Red Devils prepared to extend his loan till the end of the season.
Serie A is set to return on June 13. The season is expected to end in August. Roma coach Paulo Fonseca has already spoken out on how well Smalling has adapted to the club.
He has also expressed his hope that the defender would stay on at the Stadio Olimpico on a permanent deal.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to get Smalling’s significant wages off the books. However, United’s asking price of £22million could prove to be a bridge too far for the Italians.
The Italians have posted half-yearly losses of €87million. And if they miss out on Champions League football for next season, they will have a very limited budget in the summer. (h/t Daily Mail)
Furthermore, Roma will also have problems paying the United veteran’s high wages. (h/t Daily Mail)
