Man United set to offer £30,000-a-week wages to hold onto promising academy starlet

Angel Gomes to be offered new Manchester United contract amidst Chelsea interest

According to The Sun, Manchester United are set to offer youngster Angel Gomes a new deal worth £30,000-a-week to keep him at the club.

The youth star’s contract at Old Trafford expires on July 1, with Chelsea leading a number of clubs keen on taking him on.

One of the club’s best youth assets, the Red Devils are keen to prevent him from leaving. According to the report, the offer includes additional bonuses for appearances, goals and trophies won.

Gomes is already on £17,000-a-week wages, despite making just five first-team appearances. The player who joined the club as a schoolboy is keen to stay. That is as long as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can assure him first-team action.

Another key worry for the youngster is United’s interest in Jude Bellingham. The 16-year-old Birmingham City wonder-kid plays in a similar position and is considered to be a future superstar.

United are keen on bringing him to Old Trafford, which could further limit Gomes’ opportunities. The Gomes saga has been rumbling on for a while now, with a £20,000-a-week basic salary offer rejected in early January.

The youngster shares a close relationship with the academy staff and is expected to sign an extension. The club recently tied down youngsters Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams to new contracts.

With the coronavirus crisis set to affect the upcoming transfer market, clubs are likely to be careful of where they spend money.

Development of the youth talents could be the way forward as clubs look for ways around the financial uncertainty. United will do well to keep a player’s of Gomes’ ability.

Hopefully, Gomes will accept the new terms and stay at Old Trafford for years to come.
