Dimitar Berbatov reveals Nemanja Vidic to be his toughest opponent

Speaking with talkSport (h/t Metro) former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov has named Nemanja Vidic as the toughest opponent he has faced.

Berbatov initially played against the Serbian before spending four seasons at United playing alongside Vidic.

“I always say one name, first I played against him and then with him and it was Vidic.”

Signed from Russian side Spartak Moscow in 2006, Vidic went on to become one of the best defenders in the league. He spent 8 highly successful years at Old Trafford before moving to Inter Milan in 2014.

A player who made it to the PFA Team of the Season four times, Vidic helped United win five Premier League titles. He was also a two-time winner of the Premier League Player of the Season.

A powerhouse in the air, Vidic was also a threat at the other end. He ended up scoring 21 times in his 300 appearances for the Red Devils. Alongside Rio Ferdinand, he formed one of the best defensive partnerships back then.

Berbatov won two Premier League titles alongside Vidic. Unfortunately, he could not lead us to a Champions League title as we fell short in the final in 2009.

The final in 2011 left a sour taste in his mouth as he was completely left out of the squad in favour of Michael Owen. He would eventually leave the club to join Fulham in 2012.

Vidic was likened to former United legend Steve Bruce. Not a quick player, the Serbian’s positional sense more than made up for his lack of pace. Although beset by injuries, Vidic has earnt a reputation as a no-nonsense defender who is one of the finest to don the red shirt.
