Ed Woodward hints at frugal summer at Manchester United
According to The Guardian, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has hinted that the club is likely to take a more measured approach regarding transfers in the upcoming window.
He questioned the feasibility of spending huge sums on players. Especially, given the financial setback, clubs have faced due to the COVID-19 shutdown (h/t The Guardian).
Woodward believes that the reality of the situation must not be lost in what is a challenging time for football. He admitted that it is unlikely to be business as usual, with United being no exception (h/t The Guardian).
” It may not be ‘business as usual’ for any clubs, including ourselves, in the transfer market this summer”
Although he remains committed to the success of the football team, a wider understanding has to be garnered regarding the impact across the industry before plunging into the transfer market.
United have been linked to the likes of Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane in multi-million dollar deals.
Woodward believes talk of such expensive transfers occurs with a clear lack of understanding of the current financial situation (h/t The Guardian).
He has however hinted that as a commercial behemoth, United are likely to fare better than most clubs (h/t The Guardian).
“We have always believed that our commercial model gives us greater resilience than most clubs. And we are grateful for the enduring support of our commercial partners”
The show must go on!
With a return nowhere in sight, games behind closed doors have been mooted as a possibility. Woodward is keen for the sport to return once it is deemed safe. He is hopeful that the season can reach a satisfactory end (h/t The Guardian).
He also touched upon the importance of fans in the sport. Although games may go on behind closed doors, it will be considered a sign of normalcy being restored only when supporters are back in attendance (h/t The Guardian).

United have as much to lose as anyone if the season goes unfinished. We are well and alive in the FA Cup and Europa League while also in with a shot to make the top four.
Hopefully, the season will resume once it is safe and ensure our rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on track.
