Darren Fletcher returns to Old Trafford as club ambassador
According to MEN, former Manchester United star Darren Fletcher has returned to the club as an ambassador.
The 36-year-old came through the ranks at United before going on to establish himself as a key component in a number of Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning sides.
Fletcher is the latest club figure to return since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as manager in 2018. Mike Phelan, who was the number two to Ferguson during the Scot’s time at the helm, was appointed as Solskjaer’s deputy in March last year.
Meanwhile, former stars Quinton Fortune and Neil Wood are jointly coaching the United Under-23s.
A club video released last week showcased him in a United training top. It led to speculation that he would be returning in a coaching capacity. That has, however, not turned out to be the case.
Fletcher had earlier met with chief executive Ed Woodward with regard to returning as the sporting director. United have, however, cooled interest in hiring for the position given the upturn of fortune in the transfer market. (h/t Express)
The Scotsman is yet to announce his retirement officially since leaving Stoke City in the summer. Fletcher spent 12 years in the United first-team before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in 2015.
He made 342 appearances for the Red Devils and has scored 24 goals and 29 assists. The midfielder was a part of a United squad that won 9 major honours including the 2008 UEFA Champions League.
