Superagent begins talks with Man United over Champions League-winning midfielder

Jorge Mendes commences talks with United on signing James Rodriguez

According to the Spanish publication AS (h/t Express), Portuguese superagent Jorge Mendes is in talks with Manchester United over the transfer of Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez.

The player’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu looks to be coming to an end. He has struggled for both form and fitness and has made just 13 appearances this season.

Rodriguez’s contract at Real expires in the summer of 2021. The Spaniards will be keen to get the player off their books this summer rather than lose him for nothing.

A versatile attacker, Rodriguez is capable of playing in a number of attacking positions. He has made 124 appearances and scored 37 goals and 42 assists in his four seasons at the club. (h/t Transfermarkt)

There have also been talks regarding a potential swap deal for United star Paul Pogba. The Frenchman’s future is up in the air and he shares a mutual admiration with Zinedine Zidane.

The Real manager has attempted to bring the player to the Bernabeu in the past. He looks set to resume his attempts once again in the coming window.

In spite of having a disappointing season, Rodriguez is not short of options. Both Juventus and Everton remain keen on the Colombian.

Rodriguez has spent six seasons at Real, two of which have been on loan at Bayern Munich. He enjoyed a trophy-laden stint at both clubs and has won eight major honours, including two Champions League crowns with the former.

At 28, the Colombian still has a number of years in him and still be an experienced and accomplished signing.

United have been savvy in the transfer market of late. The likes of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have solidified the defence while Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes have added an impetus to the attack.

The addition of Rodriguez will add more quality and variety to our attack. A transfer is likely to suit both parties. The player can build up his reputation while we get a star who can compete with the best.
