Man United interested in signing Serie A star who will be free agent in the summer

United keen on signing Dries Mertens on a free in the summer

According to Daily Mail (h/t MEN), Manchester United are keen on signing Belgian attacker Dries Mertens in the summer transfer window.

The Napoli star will be out of contract in the summer and available on a free if he fails to extend his contract with the Partenopei.

According to the report, Solksjaer is keen on making three signings this summer with a midfielder, forward and a striker being the priorities.

Mertens is in the final few months of his contract

Mertens joined Napoli in 2013 and has turned into a crucial player for the Italians. He has played 303 times for the ‘Gli Azzurri’ and has scored 119 goals. (h/t Whoscored)

Chelsea were keen on securing the player in January but the deal could not be completed.

Mertens is reaching the end of his career and does not represent a long-term solution. However, the opportunity to bring in someone with the track record and experience of the 32-year-old for free should not be discounted.

Mertens is a versatile attacker and can play anywhere in the frontline. The Belgian’s set-piece abilities would also be an added benefit for us.
