According to The Sun, Douglas Costa has fuelled rumours of him leaving Juventus after liking a tweet that linked him to Manchester United. The Brazilian was a subject of a £54 million from United last summer but the offer was turned down by the Old Lady.
According to Calcio Mercato, the Red Devils have been following Costa for the last two months and a bid is expected in the summer to bring the winger to Old Trafford.
Douglas Costa spent two seasons at Bayern Munich after his move from Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk. He won two Bundesliga titles with the Bavarians in his time at Munich, having played 52 times in the Bundesliga before moving out on loan to Juventus at the start of the 2017/18 campaign.
In his debut season, he found the net four times and provided a stunning 12 assists in 18 starts for the Old Lady. Then, the Italian champions signed him on a permanent deal in the following season for a fee of £35.2 million.
The 28-year-old can play on both wings and also through the centre as an attacking midfielder. He is a fast and skilful forward who has the amazing ability to take on any defender in the world. His speed, close control and trickery is a nightmare for a defender, especially in wide areas. The Brazilian averages a massive 2.7 dribbles per 90 mins in his career, more than his Juve teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Costa has only started seven games this season for Massimiliano Allegri’s side and has been poor. The former Bayern Munich man has made the headlines for the wrong reasons this term. He was sent off against Sassuolo for spitting at an opponent and was banned for four games.
He again made the headlines after flying out to Paris for compatriot Neymar’s birthday party after being involved in reckless car crash. The behaviour was viewed as irresponsible and unprofessional by the Juve bosses and have called for a meeting with the player and his agent in the coming days.
However, that doesn’t deter away from the fact that he is a quality player. Manchester United should look to bring him in the summer to replace Alexis Sanchez after his highly-hyped move from Arsenal didn’t come to fruition so far. If the former does make the move, he will most likely feature on the right wing in a front three that will include Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Costa is under contract with Juventus until the summer of 2022 but with the poor performances on the pitch and troubles off it, Juventus could accept a reasonable bid from Manchester United.
Along with Costa Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes has also been linked with a move in the summer transfer window.
