Juan Mata’s agent has travelled to Barcelona over a possible deal, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Mirror). The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and the report claims he could move on a free transfer.
The Spaniard has been offered a one-year extension on his current deal and will be paid £6.7million, according to the Mirror.
The report adds that Arsenal are also interested in the Manchester United attacker. Mata played under Unai Emery during their time at Valencia, however, the Mirror claims that the Spaniard is happy in Manchester and prefers to stay.
The winger was in action during our 2-2 draw against Burnley and has scored four goals for us in all competitions this season. United have done exceptionally well, with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial playing wonderfully under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In fact, Mata’s time on the pitch has been limited under Ole. This was his first start for the Red Devils since the 2-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup. Although the Spaniard is in his 30s, he has tons of experience which will be important for the young players in the side.
Mata has always done a quality job when called upon and ideally, the team should keep him for another season at least.
The Spaniard might not start games regularly for us next season given that we could be under new management should Solskjaer not be given the job full-time.
