Manchester United are planning to activate a 12-month extension on Phil Jones’ current contract, according to the Metro.

The report claims the 26-year-old Jones is out of contract at the end of the season, but even with the extension, the club will listen to offers for the Englishman.

The defender has fallen down the order at United this season with Jose Mourinho preferring a centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling.

The English defender has played just two games for the Red Devils this season with United losing both games.

The report adds that Mourinho was unhappy the club did not sign a central defender in the summer. However, that doesn’t affect Jones’ situation as the club will entertain offers for him in the winter window.

The Red Devils have struggled this season to keep clean sheets as they conceded yet another goal in their win against Bournemouth.

We have let in 18 goals from 11 Premier League games this season, and there is a need to shore things up at the back.

Selling Jones might make sense if we have someone to replace the Englishman and provide cover for our other defenders.

Mourinho has splurged on the defence during his time at Old Trafford but Eric Bailly has also struggled to string together quality performances under the manager.
